Goodbye Darfur, Goodbye Sudan

Goodbye to you, women of Darfur. Perhaps, soon, the day will come where you can tend your daily activities without fear of getting harassed and molested. Perhaps, soon, you will be able to take care of your families, in peace.

Goodbye to you, valiant truck drivers. Year in, year out, every month you are transporting food all over. To bring it to the people who need it. In rough conditions. Some of you where hijacked. And were away for a long time. But you came back safely.

Goodbye to you, our partners. You were at the front, without tiring. You registered the people in need of food and you saw to it that they get it. The people did depend on your work. A good job done, always.

Goodbye to you, young people. When you grow up, you will be the ones who will be strong and who can work for this never to happen again.

Goodbye to you, my colleagues, from Sudan and from all over the world. We have been working together. We worked almost everyday. And no adversity could take our courage away. We were links, strong links, a big chain. And that made us go on. And to become friends.

And finally, Goodbye to you, Sudan. You, this beautiful country, with its beautiful people. People who know what hospitality is. People who are engaged to make things better. A lot of people from any ethnic group, from any tribe, individuals, government officials, leaders who sincerely helped to make things better. People who work hard to see that their country will have a bright future. Let's hope that this bright future will come soon.

I have been living and working with you for 4 years. In a few days I will leave. It is very hard to go. But a big part of my heart will stay behind.

Thank you Peter for your great job there. I'm a muslim, but cannot help them, but you do it... As you had live much of your time with the muslims, why don't you try to discover about Islam, maybe you will find something inside Islam. Don't let the muslim's situation today make you fear from Islam...

It's been awhile since I have befriended Sudan's PM's son. But I have no idea how Sudan looks like. Thanks for your photos. Where will you be up to after this?

I can almost see the tears falling on the computer keys. You have served well and these are the people who served with you. It has to be hard to let go.

Oh goodness! A beautiful post!

I am going to miss Darfur, Sudan, and all of those wonderful people, too, and I don't even know them! I will miss hearing about your adventures involving them, though.

I have missed commenting on your blog as well. I am sorry I disappeared for so long.

I hope I am back in business now.

What's wrong with being constantly molested anyway? I mean half the people getting molested and harassed probably secretly enjoy it. We can't always assume the worst with everything without the people actually saying "I do not like being molested and harassed."

Peter, your post is beyond words. This world is better because of people like you. You give me hope as I am sure you have given so much more to numerous others. From the small amount of time that I have known you, I find you to be someone truly humbling to be around and a rare treasure to be found.
